Novi JV Wildcats attack Cougars 41-8

John Haynes
September 13, 2009

The Novi JV played host to South Lyon East football team with the ensuing cat fight over early and big for the Novi Wildcats.  The developing Cougars football program proved no match for the experienced JV Wildcats who struck early, showed an impressive aerial attack and played rock solid defense.

It was the Novi running game that established dominance first behind the blocking of the offensive line.  Alex Davis got the call on the fifth play of the game on an inside reverse that Davis scampered for 46 yards and his first touchdown of the season.

Just to be sure the running game got it’s due, Ince pulled out a 40 yard run after a South Lyon three and out.  Then Ince started an impressive series of touchdown passes on the next four of five possessions.  First Ince connected for 35 yards with Logan Regnier for his first touchdown of the year.  On the next score Ince dropped the ball over the shoulder of Adam Haynes from 20 yards out for a score.  Ince passes found Regnier again in each of the next two possessions for touchdowns.  Ince added to the total with a two point conversion to Davis.  The extra point team, led by Novi kicker Joey Kamal, put the mechanics together for two extra points during this scoring frenzy which had the Cats in control of the game only a few seconds into the second quarter by a count of 34-0.  During the string, Ince was 5 for 6 for 98 yards behind some great pass protection of Derek Poppinger, Justin Michael, Josh Feight, Chris Diacono, Derek Edwards, Nathan Peters.

The fact that Novi had so many scoring opportunities was no coincidence as the defensive unit that is improving by the week kept the Cougars without a first down for their first six possessions.  The defense was ignited by a Haynes interception and an Alex Barry punt block and recovery on the South Lyon East 22 yard line.  But the defense, not to be outdone by the offense put six points of it’s own on the board with a 35 yard interception return by Derek Cingel.  Kamal’s extra point topped off the scoring at 41-0 with less than two minutes into the second quarter.

Other defenders that generated some inspired play was Mike Riley’s tackles and interception and the play pursuit of Cormac Littleton as the game’s leading tackler.  Overall, 21 players were credited with contributing to tackles.  The Cougars were held scoreless until they notched their only score in the fourth quarter.

The Novi offense behind quarterback Justin Brooks provided plenty of exciting tackle breaking play led by Brooks, Barry and Frankie Mastrangelo.
