| Pirates Sink Freshman Wildcats |

Cathy Schramm October 23, 2009 Novi’s freshman football squad lost a hard fought game at home 32 – 20 to the Pinckney Pirates on October 22nd. It was the team’s final game of the season and they competed fierce determination. Pinckney got on the board first with a long run to take a 6 – 0 lead. The Novi Freshman responded with an impressive ofensive drive of their own. Quarterback Blake Boron hit Brian Bonnell for a 32 yard pass play that put the Wildcats first and goal from the seven yard line. Ricki Nogami ran the ball in for the score. After an unsuccessful two point conversion attempt it was tied at 6 – 6. Pinckney scored again on the first play of their next possession making it Pinckney 12, Novi 6. The Wildcat’s offense was able to move the ball with nice runs from Kyle Matel, Jon Mencer and Michael Smith. The drive ended with a Pinckney interception and the Novi defense took over. Making tackles for the Novi defense were Robbie Deighton, Mencer, Tyler Sloan, Mitchell Kameron, Sparsh Mengi and Rob Armiak. Pinckney scored again making it 18 – 6 in their favor with 9:46 left in the first half. Novi’s next two possessions ended in turnovers as the rain began to fall making ball handling tough. The half ended on a strong defensive stand for Novi with a key tackles by Eric Ballard, Chris Volpe, Artie Teran and a sack from Tyler Sloan. The second half opened up with Pinckney fumbling the ball and the Wildcat’s taking over on their own 44 yard line. Run’s by Nogami, Mencer, Smith and Boron produced several first downs. Mencer’s 13 yard touchdown run fired up the team and crowd. After a 2 point conversion by Mencer it was Pinckney 18 – Novi 14. Pinckney scored on their next possession making it 24 – 14 at the end of the third quarter. The teams traded turnovers in the slick conditions and with 7:27 left in the contest the Wildcat’s went to work putting together a 25 yard drive resulting in a 5 yard TD run by Michael Smith making it Pinckney 24, Novi 20. Pinckney quickly scored again making it 32 – 20. Novi fought hard the final five minutes with impressive running by Chanden Nelson, but could not score again. The final score was Pinckney 32 – Novi 20. |
