Freshman Wildcats Come Up Short Against Cougars

September 13, 2009

The Novi Freshman Football team lost a hard fought game to the South Lyon East  Cougar’s on September 10th at Wildcat Field.  For the second straight week the team’s opponents got off to a quick start with a long drive resulting in a touchdown before most of the fans were in their seats.  Novi answered with a long drive of their own.    The Novi ground game came to life with Michael Smith and John Mencer moving the chains.  Mencer’s 25 yard run put the ball deep in East’s territory.  The drive was capped off with a 17 yard Blake Boron to Rob Armiak  TD pass.  Michael Smith ran in the 2 point conversion to make it 8 – 7 Wildcat’s.

South Lyon scored three more times in the first half. Matt Forche, Robbie Deighton and Riki Nogami led the Wildcat defense with key tackles. Several long punt’s by Mario Ferrini kept the Cougar’s pinned deep in their own territory, the score at halftime was 26 – 8 in favor of SL East.

In the second half, the Wildcat’s mounted a great comeback.  The first drive started at the Novi 22 yard line.  Strong running by Matt Forche and Michal Smith moved the chains. Smith’s 55 yard run put the Wildcat’s in scoring position. Rob Armiak  punched the ball into the end zone and Michael Smith’s 2 point conversion cut the Cougar lead to 26 – 16.  After the Novi defense came up big, the Wildcat offense took over and had another great drive.   A terrific punt return by Riki Nogami gave Novi excellent field position.   The Wildcat’s running game took up huge chunks of yardage behind the offensive line of Scott Schramm, Mario Ferrini, Artie Teran, Sparsh Mengi , Kameron Mitchell and Nick Shelar.  Key run’s by Mencer, Smith and Kyle Matel led to another Rob Armiak TD.  This made the score SLE – 26, Novi 22.

The Wildcat’s last three drives fell short and the final score was South Lyon East 32, Novi 22. The freshmen take on Salem on September 17th on the road.
