Novi -- Jon Alandt scored the winning touchdown in overtime on a 7-yard run to give Northville a 14-8 victory over Novi on Friday.

"They were just totally, totally excited," Northville coach Matt Ladach said. "It was a great feeling. I even was overwhelmed with excitement. It was a great victory, there was no question about it."

Alandt, who had 15 carries for 55 yards and two receptions for 58 yards, caught a 48-yard touchdown, which set up a tying two-point conversion from Mike Wegzyn in the rainy Kensington Lakes Activities Association Central game.

Novi (3-4, 3-2) started the scoring with a safety and then a touchdown to take an early 8-0 lead. Northville (5-2, 4-1) tied the score with 26 seconds remaining in the first half. The teams played a scoreless second half, more because of good defensive play rather than the weather, Ladach said.

Northville blocked Novi's extra-point kick, which turned out to be crucial.

"There is no question that was one of the biggest plays of the game," Ladach said. "That block and our successful play on our two-point conversion."

Novi went three downs before missing a 23-yard field goal on the first possession in overtime. On the ensuing drive, Ladach called the same play for Alandt on both of the team's two overtime plays. The first resulted in a 3-yard gain, but the second he bounced to the outside for the winning score.

Junior Varsity
JV Ride Herd on Mustangs 28-0

John Haynes
October 10, 2009

In the battle of the ‘junior jug’ the Novi JV football team traveled to Northville to regain the handle and never relinquished control.  The 4-2 Mustangs proved no match for the Novi’s dominant offense and characteristically stingy defense.  Novi improved their record to 6-0-1 to clinch the KLAA Central Division championship.  The JV Wildcats will host the 3-4 JV Plymouth Wildcats in the KLAA South Division cross over on October 15.

In a cool drizzle at the start of the game, Novi got on their horse early with a defensive three and out which forced a Northville punt to the Novi 48.  After testing the defensive line with two rushes, quarterback Derek Ince stepped into the pocket to deliver a 50 yard touchdown pass to Adam Haynes.  Haynes and the extra point team added one to warm up the scoreboard at 7-0.

The defense kept up their reputation for outstanding play all night.  The defense was led by tacklers...

Freshman
Freshmen Tie Mustangs, 6-6
Cathy Schramm
October 11, 2009

Novi High School’s freshman football team took on the Northville Mustangs on October 8th at Northville.  It was an evenly matched game with both sides playing tough defense during the first half.  Novi moved the ball on several drives with key runs by Michael Smith, Grant Wheeler and Tre Cadwell, but the Wildcats were unable to score in the first two quarters.  The Wildcats played tough defense, stopping the Mustangs on their first four drives.  Leading Novi with key tackles were Matt Forche, Robbie Deighton, Gentry Oden.  After a Novi turnover Northville scored the lone touchdown in the first half, punching the ball in on the ground.  After missing the extra point the teams went into the half with the score, Northville 6,  Novi 0.

In the third quarter the Novi’s offense got off to a good start moving the ball on the ground, the drive ended with a Michael Smith 3 yard touchdown run.  The PAT was blocked leaving the score tied at 6.  From there on out it was a defensive struggle with neither team able to move the ball successfully. Novi’s Ricki Nagomi returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown only to have it called back due to a penalty.  The final score ended in a tie at 6.  Novi’s next game is at home on October 15.
