NOVI — Please excuse the Walled Lake Central football team and its fans for being so ecstatic.

With the Vikings; thorough, 20-6 defeat of host Novi in a Kensington Lakes Activities Association crossover on Thursday, Central is in some rare territory. Following two down years, Central is off to a 2-0 start for only the sixth time in school history and the first time since 2003. Both wins have come on the road, as the Vikings recorded a 37-0 shutout win at South Lyon last week.

“This was a statement game,” Central head coach Bob Meyer said. “We’re big and physical on the line this year. I’ve never had that before. Usually we’re small and agile, but this year we’re both. We were young the past two years and the underclassmen all got a lot of time on the field. It’s starting to pay dividends now. A lot of people counted us out early, but the record speaks for itself.”

Central garnered the victory by dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, with the Vikings outrushing the Wildcats 211-135 yards.

Central was led by a pair of true gems, senior quarterback Joe Diamond and senior wide receiver Sam Pearlstein.

Diamond led Central’s rushing attack with 116 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, and was 7-for-9 passing for 77 yards. He also connected with Pearlstein, who had three receptions for 52 yards, o

Junior Varsity
JV Sets Sail on the Vikings, 20-6

John Haynes
September 6, 2009

The Novi JV football team survived three turn overs and an active Walled Lake Central quarterback to outperform their Viking opponents in the second game of the season, stretching their record to 2-0.

The Cats established their presence and ability to move the ball on the first series of the game, driving almost the length of the field, only to fumble the ball on the Viking seven yard line.  The Novi defense stepped up early to stop the first Viking drive.  For the day, over seventeen Wildcats were involved in stops for the defense.  Leading Novi tacklers were Chris Diacono, Adam Haynes, Lance Lilla, Derek Poppenger, Andrew Bell, Nick Abboud, Derek Cingel, Alejandro Albuerne, Derek Edwards, Justin Brooke and Jimmy Eloff.

The Cats were the first to reach the end zone.  Good blocking at the line and downfield led the running of Eloff and Alex Davis before Derek Ince punched in the quarterback sneak for the first score.  On the following Vikings drive, the quarterback worried the defense with options and sweeps, running on two of three plays before the defense finally yielded after three plays from the one yard line.

After a Haynes kickoff return to the Viking 35 yard line, the offense fumbled the ball over to the Vikings.  The defense stepped up to force a three and out punt by Walled Lake. Haynes picked up the offensive pace again on two long gains before Eloff finished the drive with a 7 yard run,

The Novi Freshman Football team went on the road to face Walled Lake Central on Wednesday, September 2nd.  The team came up short, falling to the Vikings 22 -6.

The Vikings got off to a quick start scoring the first time they had the ball to make it 6 -0.  After several back and forth possessions Central put together another long scoring drive making it 14 – 0.  Novi’s defense stopped Central on their next possession with key tackles from Jon Mencer and Robbie Deigton.  In the second Quarter, the Wildcat defense stayed tough with great tackles from Gentry Oden and  Sparsh  Mengi.  Just before the half, Central put together a long scoring drive making it 22 – 0 at the break.

In the second half the Wildcats showed signs of life with long runs from Michael Smith and Grant Wheeler.  Novi scored on a terrific 32 yard run by Tre Cadwell to make it 22 – 6 ending the scoring.  The freshman Wildcats tried valiantly to come back but could not get into the end zone again.  The defense shut out the Vikings in the second half with a great defensive effort. The Freshman teams next game is September 10th at home.
